You may be surprised, but one of the most haunted houses in the nation may be located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue... The White House. Everyone from Presidents to first ladies, and staff members to guests, have reported feeling ghostly presences in the famous house. People have heard unexplained noises, and have even encountered apparitions.

There have been several stories about ghosts of former Presidents revisiting the White House. However, the most common and popular is that of Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln's Ghost is said to have haunted the White House since his death. It is widely believed that when he was president, Lincoln might have known of his assassination before he died, because he had a dream in April 1865, the month that he was assassinated. Eleanor Roosevelt reported that she felt the presence of Lincoln watching her as she was in the Lincoln bedroom. During the Roosevelt administration, a clerk claimed to have seen the ghost of Lincoln, sitting on a bed and pulling off his boots. On yet another occasion, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands was spending the night at the White House during the Roosevelt presidency and was awakened by a knock on the bedroom door. She answered it, and was confronted with the specter of Abe Lincoln staring at her from the hallway. Calvin Coolidge's wife reported seeing the ghost of Lincoln several times, standing with his hands clasped behind his back at a window in the Oval Office, looking out across the Potomac.

President Harrison is said to be heard rummaging around in the attic of the White House, looking for who knows what. President Andrew Jackson is thought to haunt his White House bedroom. And the ghost of First Lady Abigail Adams was seen floating through one of the White House hallways, as if carrying something.

Michelle Obama, the president's wife told youngsters visiting the White House a strange story. It seems that in the last ten days or so she and her husband, President Barack Obama, have been awakened from a sound sleep in the middle of the night. She said they heard strange sounds in the hall, and that the two of them had gone to investigate... but nothing was there. Also, she said, some people in her family had reported the unusual sensation at times of someone or something gnawing or chewing on their feet, as if trying to eat them from the bottom up.

Is the White House haunted? Who knows - but since no paranormal investigation group is likely to be invited inside to make a determination, we'll probably just have to listen to the stories that the people who live there tell.
